Advanced Treatment Options for Dry Eye

In ideal health, your eyes would have a beautiful layer of tears coating, protecting and nourishing your ocular surface. However, one of the most common topics within the office are indications of dry eye disease. In turn, this indicates that our guests tear film is compromised, leaving their eyes exposed, vulnerable and malnourished. Often symptoms include burning, itching, stinging eyes, seemingly contrary overproduction of tears and inconsistent vision throughout the day.

Luckily, you can find new and proven technology to achieve a better quality and quantity of effective tear film!

Did you know?

Many issues can contribute to dry eye disease such as:

  • A microscopic buildup of bacteria,
  • Microscopic mite infestation called demodex,
  • Clogged oil glands
  • Lack of tears
  • Lack of lid stimulation
  • Mechanical error of the lid not fully shutting when blinking and sleeping.

As you can imagine, if dry eye disease is left untreated, you risk damage to the ocular surface specifically the cornea.

Schedule Your Dry Eye Evaluation with Us!

Because of your unique life, our doctors are happy to provide you with a thorough examination, tailored to inform us of your specific dry eye needs. With consideration of your experience, history and dry eye diagnostics, our doctors provide you with solutions to address the cause of your dry eye symptoms. Some key indicators we will utilize in your exam may include the following:

  • Tear Breakup Time

How long it takes for your tears to break-up from coating evenly over your eye will inform us of your tear quality and will be helpful in monitoring progress overtime. The longer the tears take to break up, the longer your eyes are protected.

  • LipiScan

Each of the four eyelids should have 40 oil glands that are nice and tall, unclogged and producing oil. Oil within the tear film enable the tears to stay hydrated, without the oil, tears quickly evaporate. Due to several causes, our glands may lose their structure, clog and even ‘die off’. This scan provides an image of the length, loss and amount of potential oil glands to unclog within your eye lid.

  • Lid Mechanics

Ideal lid mechanics would include a fully shut lid when sleeping and blinking. As we age, our muscles can become less effective in helping us reach that full rang of motion when attempting to shut our lids. Our doctors will closely examine your blink mechanics for appropriate solutions.

If left untreated, severe dry eye can cause serious irritation to the front of the eye and potentially lead to vision loss.

  • For those who suffer with inflammation, blepharitis and microscopic mite infestation (Demodex), we are grateful to present BlephEx. Eye lid bacteria produces a biofilm that traps and harbors bacterial exotoxins along the lid margin. These exotoxins penetrate the eyelid tissue causing low-grade inflammation which adversely affects the tear glands, turning down tear production. Fewer tears containing fewer antibodies allow even more bacteria accumulate and a vicious cycle is established, leading to chronic irritation and dry eye.  BlephEx™ can save the patient hundreds of dollars in the costs of prescription drops and artificial tears by removing the blepharitis and demodex.
